Twitter Rhetorical Analysis

Sarcasm @ Comedy is a twitter account that currently has 2.87 million followers and 108K tweets that mostly consist of swearing and sarcasm. This account joined in August 2009 and became famous worldwide ever since. The account “Sarcasm @ComedyPosts” writes, “Women belong in the kitchen. Men belong in the kitchen. Everyone belongs in the kitchen. Kitchen has food” (Sarcasm, @ComedyPosts). The writer inputs his/her thought on gender equality conveying that duties should not be directed towards a certain gender. The writer utilizes humor to appeal to the audience’s emotions. This author not only appeals to an audience that enjoys some humor and food, but also to the supporters of gender equality. The first line represents one of the most infamous sexist phrase that, “women belong in the kitchen”. Throughout history, women were depicted to live in the kitchen, however, more and more men are proving otherwise. The second line portrays that not only women “belong” in the kitchen, because like the next line states, “everyone belongs in the kitchen.” Finally, the last line instills humor and appeals to a bigger audience. @ComedyPosts portrays that nothing is wrong with either genders being in the kitchen because the kitchen has food and who doesn’t love food? Although the author’s publication is very informal the purpose is to clear stereotypes among genders. There are no formal constraints or editorial oversights that the writer has, other than people that may share the account. Twitter is very informal and contains tweets that can be both serious or for entertainment. This tweet is effective and purposeful because it contains both a serious topic and stance on gender equality, yet a sense of humor. Similar to my other source by Beyoncé on Feminism, both articles appeal to the audience’s logic. Beyoncé’s article is very powerful and is filled with stats that have the potential to boost the economy. Although this twitter account does not have any stats, the writer also persuades the audience through subtle reason. The reason is that EVERYONE belongs in the kitchen because food is great.

Beyonce's Gender Equality is a Myth Rhetorical Analysis

Beyoncé is a worldwide phenomenon who has caused craze around the world with her hit songs, famous moves, and electric performances. Her fanbase, the “Beyhive”, has supported her not just for her music but also for her fierce support of feminism. An example of her outward support is an essay that she wrote pertaining to gender equality. Her main claim is that women lack the same amount of opportunities as men. “Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes.” This is an example of logos in which she uses a survey that recorded the income that women made compared to men. She uses mainly data to represent her arguments but she also appeals to emotion as well. “Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers and sisters earn more—commensurate with their qualifications and not their gender.” Beyoncé utilizes pathos because if any men read this essay it appeals to their personal relationships with women to make them realize that all women have a personal relationship with a man. The infamous writer attempts to reveal that we, as a society, need to teach all genders to respect women. In addition, she conveys that women are equal to them in order to receive the same opportunities as men. Beyoncé’s target audience is women of mainly a younger age. We know this because she says the word “we”, referring to women, and she makes the point that we need to change the minds of the future generations to relate to younger women that can make a difference. The audience affects the author’s tone to a more empowering feeling that would make her audience more willing to work for change. “We must demand that we all receive 100 percent of the opportunities.” This is an example of one of the empowering tones that she uses to influence the overall tone of the paper. The author’s purpose is to disillusion her audience from the myth of gender equality, demand equality, and she utilizes facts to support this claim.

CRA Topic Questions

My subject on the Comparative Rhetorical Analysis is going to be on Gender Equality. I chose this topic because recently, on January 21st , a Women’s march took place in Washington D.C. An estimate of 500,000 people marched in DC. In addition, there were 680 marches that day with an estimated total of around 5 million people marching for women’s equality. This was a historic day for women and a portrayal of power for not only men, but for women. It is a current and ongoing issue that obviously acquires and deserves more than attention. On June 4th 1919, Congress had passed the 19th amendment that guarantees all American women the right to vote. Despite this monumental date, women to this day are still undermined in society. The main issue of gender equality is continually rising on all sorts of media such as: CNN, ABC, fox news, nydailynews, and more. Women are fighting to seek for more equal pay, a decrease stereotypes, more dominance, and equal respect. This debate is related to all economical, social, cultural, and political aspects. Discourses would cross all parts of media: news, television, magazines, articles, and social media. CNN especially has many articles on that pertain to the Women’s March. Interviews from people within the march would provide good source for accurate analysis, but it is important to be cautious of any bias information.
